Hello fellow Pilates teachers,
Today, I want to share an incident that I witnessed on a plane yesterday. It sparked some thoughts about empathy, understanding, and how we handle our daily interactions, especially as teachers and guides in the Pilates community.
A lady with mobility issues and clearly in poor health boarded the plane. She required assistance to get on, to her seat, and later even moved to an empty seat nearby for more comfort. She stretched her leg towards a gentleman sitting by the window, which led to a significant altercation. The gentleman, reacting aggressively, demanded she return to her original seat. The situation escalated to the point where the lady hit the man, almost causing the flight to be disrupted.
Reflecting on this, it’s clear that while the lady was in the wrong for overstepping her bounds, her intent was comfort in a difficult situation. The man’s aggressive response, however, was unnecessary and exacerbated the problem. This incident highlighted how we all interact on a day-to-day basis and the importance of empathy and patience.
Empathy and Patience in Pilates
As Pilates teachers, we often encounter students facing their own physical and emotional challenges. This incident serves as a reminder that empathy and patience can transform our interactions, both in and out of the studio. Here are some key takeaways:
1. Empathy and Patience: Understanding that others may have unseen challenges can help us respond more kindly. In Pilates, this means recognising the unique needs and limitations of each student and adjusting our approach accordingly.
2. Self-awareness: Recognising our triggers and managing our reactions can prevent unnecessary stress and aggression. In the studio, this might involve taking a moment to breathe and consider a student's perspective before responding.
3. Kindness: Small acts of kindness and patience can greatly improve our interactions and reduce stress. Offering a helping hand or a kind word in the studio can create a positive and supportive environment for our students.
4. Boundaries and Respect: While it's important to be kind, it's also crucial to maintain personal boundaries and communicate them respectfully. This balance ensures mutual respect and comfort in our classes.
Applying These Lessons
On this Wellness Wednesday, let’s commit to fostering a more compassionate and understanding environment in our Pilates practice. By doing so, we not only improve our own mental and emotional health but also contribute positively to the well-being of our students.
Let's remember that our reactions and behaviours set the tone in our studios. Handling situations with kindness and empathy can make a world of difference, creating a supportive and nurturing space for everyone involved.
Warm regards,
Michael
