Pilates Self-Care Saturday: A Moment with Cacao

There has been a lot of talk lately about cacao. Not the usual supermarket cocoa powder we stir into hot milk on a winter’s night but raw cacao, the kind that wellness spaces and social media seem to celebrate as a superfood. It is tempting to roll your eyes at yet another miracle ingredient but I’ll admit, as a Pilates Teacher I was curious.
This week I decided to slow down and explore what makes cacao so special.
First, let’s be clear, raw cacao is not the same as the dusty brown powder most of us grew up with. The cacao I am talking about comes from cold pressed unroasted beans. This gentle process helps retain the antioxidants, minerals, and mood boosting compounds that get stripped away in the processing of regular cocoa.
And the benefits? It is richer in magnesium, iron, and flavonoids than most of us realise. These are the compounds that support heart health, reduce inflammation, and even improve focus and energy. There is also theobromine, a gentle stimulant (less jittery than caffeine), and mood enhancers like serotonin and phenylethylamine often called the bliss chemicals.
But for me, the biggest draw is not just the science. It is the ritual.
This morning I made a warm cup of cacao. A teaspoon of raw powder whisked into almond milk with a pinch of cinnamon and a touch of maple syrup. I didn’t rush. I didn’t sip while scrolling emails or making a to-do list. Instead, I sat in the quiet letting the rich earthy aroma fill the room. It was grounding. Almost meditative.
That is the beauty of self-care. It does not have to be complicated or performative. Sometimes it is as simple as a warm drink cradled between your hands and a few moments of stillness to remind yourself that you are allowed to pause.
If you are curious about trying cacao yourself look for organic cold pressed brands often found in health food stores or online. Cacao nibs are lovely sprinkled over yoghurt or oats and raw cacao powder works beautifully in smoothies or mindful chocolate making at home.
Just remember this is not about finding the next quick fix or superfood trend. It is about creating small nourishing moments that bring you back to yourself.
So maybe today take five minutes. Brew a cup. Sit. Breathe. And let that simple act be your Self-Care Saturday.
