Pilates Self-Care Saturday: Five Quiet Minutes

Step away from the noise and rediscover the power of stillness.
Five quiet minutes each day can calm the mind and restore balance.

In a world that never seems to stop talking, perhaps one of the greatest acts of self-care is simply being quiet.

From the moment we wake up, many of us are surrounded by noise. Before our feet even touch the floor, we may have checked our phones, looked at emails, read the news, or scrolled through social media. Throughout the day there are conversations, notifications, traffic, television, podcasts, and the constant demands of work and family life. Even when we finally sit down in the evening, our minds often continue racing through tomorrow's plans and yesterday's unfinished tasks.

This week, I would like to suggest something remarkably simple. Take five quiet minutes.

I am not talking about meditation, mindfulness, or any particular technique. Those can all be valuable practices, but this is something much simpler. It is simply five minutes where you deliberately step away from the noise and allow yourself a moment of peace. No phone, no television, no music, no distractions. Just five minutes to sit quietly and be present.

For me, those five minutes often happen first thing in the morning. I have always enjoyed getting up early before the rest of the world seems to wake up. There is something special about sitting with a coffee, watching the daylight slowly arrive, and enjoying the calm before the day begins. It is a small ritual, but one that gives me a sense of balance before emails, classes, meetings, and responsibilities start competing for attention.

Others may prefer those quiet moments at the end of the day. As the evening settles and the pace of life slows, there can be an opportunity to sit quietly, reflect, and allow the mind to settle. It does not matter when you choose to do it. What matters is creating a small space in your day that belongs entirely to you.

Many people find silence surprisingly uncomfortable. We have become so accustomed to being connected and entertained that being alone with our thoughts can feel unfamiliar. Yet it is often during these quiet moments that we notice what is really happening. We become aware of tension we have been carrying, worries we have been pushing aside, or perhaps simply how tired we really are. Sometimes we discover that things are not as overwhelming as they first appeared. Sometimes we find gratitude for things we had overlooked.

As Pilates teachers and practitioners, we spend a great deal of time encouraging awareness. We ask clients to notice their posture, their breathing, their movement patterns, and the way their body feels. Self-care asks us to bring that same awareness to ourselves. Not through effort or analysis, but through stillness.

What makes this practice so appealing is its simplicity. There is nothing to buy, nothing to learn, and nothing to achieve. In a world where even relaxation is often packaged, marketed, and sold back to us, five minutes of quiet remains completely free.

Today, make a small pledge to yourself. Find five quiet minutes somewhere in your day. Sit with a cup of coffee, look out of the window, listen to the birds, watch the clouds move, or simply sit in silence. Give yourself permission to pause.

You may be surprised by how much difference five minutes can make. Sometimes the most productive thing we can do is stop for a moment and simply be.
