Pilates Self-Care Saturday: The Many Seasons of Friendship

Some friends stay forever, others leave memories that last a lifetime.
Friendship is a journey, with companions joining us for different seasons.

As this is my 1000th blog, it seemed fitting to reflect on something that touches every one of us. Friendship is one of life's greatest gifts, yet it is also one of the things that changes the most as we move through different stages of our lives. Some friends stay with us for decades and know every version of who we have been.

Others come into our lives for a specific period, perhaps through work, Pilates, travel, family, or a shared interest, and then quietly drift away as our circumstances change. There are friends we may only see once a year, yet the moment we meet again it feels as though no time has passed at all.

There are friends who support us during difficult times, friends who make us laugh, and friends who teach us important lessons about ourselves. As we get older, we often realise that not every friendship is meant to last forever. Some friendships are seasonal, arriving exactly when we need them and leaving when their role in our lives has been fulfilled. Rather than seeing this as a loss, perhaps we can view it as part of the natural rhythm of life. Every friendship leaves something behind, whether it is a memory, a lesson, encouragement, or simply a reminder that we were not alone during a particular chapter of our journey.

When we think about self-care, we often focus on exercise, nutrition, sleep, and stress management, but meaningful friendships may be one of the most important forms of self-care we have. They give us connection, support, perspective, and a sense of belonging. As I write this 1000th blog, I find myself grateful for the many people who have shared parts of my journey.

Some are still beside me, some have moved on, and some reappear from time to time, but each has played a role in shaping who I am today. Perhaps the true value of friendship is not measured by how long it lasts, but by how much richer it makes the time we spend together.

Thank you for being part of this journey and for sharing these moments with me over the past 1000 blogs.
