Pilates Technique Thursday: The 30 Second Conversation Strategy

As Pilates teachers we often focus on refining movement breath and alignment. But one of the most powerful tools we have in our teaching is not physical — it is our communication. How we speak to clients can shift the energy of a session before we have even begun teaching.
One technique I have found incredibly effective and now teach regularly to new instructors is what I call The 30 Second Conversation Strategy.
Within the first 30 seconds of speaking to someone, whether it is a new client or someone you have taught for years, aim to do one of the following:
Compliment them
Uplift them
Encourage them
It has to be genuine. Forced flattery falls flat. But a sincere thoughtful comment can change everything.
“I noticed how much more connected your movement was in class last week. It is lovely to see that progress.” “You have picked such a great time to come in. This session will really help release some of that tension.”
The goal is to add to the other person’s experience. When a client feels you are invested in more than just counting reps, when they feel seen encouraged and valued, it deepens trust motivation and retention.
They will leave not just saying, "That was a great class,” but rather, “I really enjoy working with them.”
So next time a client walks through the door, start the clock. In the first 30 seconds, say something that leaves them feeling lighter.
It is a small shift with a big impact.
