With the colder months settling in, many people begin to experience the familiar symptoms of winter colds, chest congestion, and blocked sinuses. At the moment there seems to be a lot of chest infections circulating again, and unfortunately my own chest infection has decided to make a return. It is never particularly welcome, especially when breathing comfortably is so important for both daily life and for teaching movement.

When this happens I often return to a very simple natural remedy that has been used for generations. It involves nothing more complicated than a bowl of hot water, a towel, and sometimes a few herbs.

The method is straightforward. A bowl of hot water is placed on the table and herbs or a few drops of essential oil are added. Leaning forward over the bowl with a towel over the head helps trap the steam so it can be inhaled slowly for several minutes. The warm moist air can feel incredibly soothing when the chest feels tight or the sinuses are blocked.

Steam inhalation works mainly by adding moisture to the airways. Warm moisture can help loosen mucus and ease irritation in the nasal passages and upper respiratory tract. This can make breathing feel more comfortable, which is something we all appreciate when dealing with winter infections.

People often add herbs such as eucalyptus, peppermint, thyme, or chamomile to the hot water. These release aromatic compounds into the steam and many people find they help create the feeling of clearer airways and easier breathing.

Of course care is needed. The water should be hot but not boiling when you lean over the bowl, and the bowl should be placed on a stable surface to avoid burns.

For those of us who teach Pilates, anything that helps restore comfortable breathing is important. When the respiratory system feels clear and relaxed, the diaphragm and rib cage can move more freely. This supports the kind of gentle, efficient breathing that we aim for in Pilates practice.

Sometimes the most helpful remedies are also the simplest. A bowl of hot water, a towel, and a few herbs can still offer a little relief during the winter months when the chest and sinuses are under pressure.
