Welcome to Pilates Movement Monday! Today, we're putting the spotlight on the Side Pull Up, a powerful and challenging exercise performed on the Wunda Chair. Originally designed by Joseph Pilates for home use, the Wunda Chair has found its rightful place in studios worldwide, opening up numerous possibilities for standing exercises and creative movement variations.
Why the Side Pull Up?
The Side Pull Up is a fantastic exercise to engage the entire body, truly highlighting your client’s core strength, coordination, and balance. As you lift, the core becomes actively engaged, controlling the movement's ascent and descent. This isn't just about strength, it's about integrated control and precise execution.
Spring Resistance Matters
One of the primary considerations when teaching the Side Pull Up is spring resistance. The springs dramatically influence the exercise:
More Springs: Increased assistance makes the movement easier, suitable for clients still building strength or stability.
Fewer Springs: Greater challenge, requiring the client to rely heavily on their core and overall body control, making this an excellent progression for advanced students.
Assessing Your Clients
When observing clients perform this movement, pay careful attention to their individual challenges:
Is lumbar spine restriction limiting their range of motion?
Are they demonstrating adequate shoulder stability?
Do they maintain proper alignment and control throughout the movement?
Each of these elements provides valuable information about your client's physical condition and how best to support their progression safely and effectively.
A Word of Caution
Due to the nature of this exercise, which involves low deflection, always proceed carefully with clients experiencing spinal issues. Modify the exercise appropriately, perhaps beginning with higher spring resistance or incorporating preparatory movements to ensure safety and comfort.
Celebrating Achievement
Although the Side Pull Up is undoubtedly on the more challenging end of Pilates exercises, the sense of accomplishment when executed well is significant. Encouraging clients through this process can enhance their confidence and commitment to their Pilates journey.
Use today's session to explore the possibilities of the Side Pull Up, challenge your clients thoughtfully, and celebrate their progress on the Wunda Chair.
