Pilates Self-Care Saturday: Auditing Your Environment

Peaceful Pilates corner overlooking rolling countryside, inviting reflection, movement, and calm.

When we think about self-care, our minds often go straight to exercise, nutrition, sleep, mindfulness, or relaxation. These are all important factors in maintaining our wellbeing, but there is another influence that often goes unnoticed. The environment we spend our time in can have a significant impact on how we feel, think, move, and function throughout the day.

As Pilates teachers, we are trained to observe movement and posture. We notice how a

person's body responds to different conditions and challenges. Yet we do not always apply the same level of observation to the spaces around us. The room where we work, teach, exercise, eat, or relax may be quietly affecting our energy levels and overall wellbeing without us even realising it.

Take a moment to consider the spaces you spend the most time in. Is your workspace organised and easy to use, or does it create unnecessary stress every time you sit down? Does your studio feel welcoming and calm, or is it becoming cluttered with equipment, paperwork, and distractions? Is your home arranged in a way that supports relaxation, or does it constantly remind you of unfinished tasks?

The environment around us influences both our physical and mental state. Poor lighting can contribute to fatigue. Excessive noise can increase stress levels. An uncomfortable chair or poorly positioned computer screen can encourage poor posture and unnecessary tension.

Even something as simple as a lack of fresh air can affect concentration and energy.

In Pilates, we often discuss efficiency of movement. We encourage our clients to remove unnecessary tension and find easier, more balanced ways of moving. Perhaps the same principle can be applied to our surroundings. Rather than working harder to feel better, we might benefit from making our environment work better for us.

This weekend, try conducting a simple audit of one area in your life. It could be your office, your teaching space, your living room, or even your car. Look at it with fresh eyes. Ask yourself whether that environment is helping or hindering your wellbeing. Consider what small changes might improve the way the space functions and feels.

You may discover that a few simple adjustments make a surprising difference. Clearing a desk, improving the lighting, opening a window, adding a plant, rearranging furniture, or creating a more organised storage system can all contribute to a greater sense of calm and control. Small changes often have a larger impact than we expect.

Self-care is not always about adding another task to the list. Sometimes it is about removing obstacles that quietly drain our energy every day. By paying attention to our surroundings, we create an environment that supports good habits, better posture, clearer thinking, and improved wellbeing.

This Self-Care Saturday, instead of focusing solely on changing yourself, spend a little time considering the space around you. You may find that improving your environment is one of the simplest and most effective forms of self-care available.
