Pilates Technique Thursday: Stay Strong in Your Teaching Identity

Group of people sitting together in a bright gym, smiling and chatting. Text on wall: "Real People. Real Teachers. Real Results." Casual mood.
Pilates teaching goes beyond social media, creating strength, trust, and lifelong learning.

Over the last couple of weeks, there have been articles in the national press about Pilates. Some of them have not shown the industry in a positive light.

But we need to remember something important. We are not defined by Instagram. We are not defined by social media trends, dramatic images, or movements designed more for performance than teaching. Instagram may show creativity, but it does not represent the full depth of our industry.

The real Pilates industry is found in studios, community halls, training centres, and private sessions. It is found in teachers helping people move better, feel stronger, manage challenges, recover confidence, and understand their bodies. It is found in the daily work that rarely makes a headline because, apparently, quiet professionalism is too boring for the press.

There are many excellent Pilates teachers across the UK and around the world. Teachers who work with beginners, older adults, athletes, people with conditions, people coming for fitness, people coming because they want to feel better in their own body. That is the industry I know. That is the industry we should stand behind.

So please do not get distracted by social media noise or articles that only show one part of the picture. Stay grounded in who you are and what you teach. Do not let imposter syndrome creep in because the industry is changing, or because someone online appears to know more, do more, or look more impressive.

As teachers, we never know everything. I have been teaching for many years, and I still believe learning never stops. Training is only the start. The real learning continues through your clients, through experience, through study, and through staying open to new information.

Our understanding of the body continues to grow. It is no longer just about learning a set of muscles and bones. That is the foundation, but it is not the whole picture. We need to keep learning about fascia, movement, conditions, adaptations, and the real people who come through our doors with real needs.

I am passionate about this because I believe strongly in raising standards and protecting quality in our industry. I am involved with several organisations working to support this, because Pilates deserves to be represented properly.

So this morning, I simply want to remind you how good you are. Keep learning. Keep questioning. Keep teaching with care. Stay strong in your identity as a teacher.

Do not let the press, social media, or the latest online panic define what you do.

Our industry is stronger than that.
