Pilates Thoughtful Tuesday: What Does Locking In Mean to You?

Simple yet strong, this lock represents the boundaries we set to protect our energy.
A brass padlock symbolising focus, discipline, and personal commitment to staying locked in.

Have you ever said the words "I feel locked in" and felt unsure what you actually meant by that?

It is a phrase that can carry so many different meanings, depending on where we are in our lives. For one person, it might sound like pressure or overwhelm. For someone else, it might feel like purpose and alignment. The truth is, locking in means something different for everyone, and it can even change over time for the same person.

For some, locking in is about discipline. It is about early nights, eating well, getting the workout in, and keeping focused on the task at hand. For others, locking in means engaging with the world more fully. Connecting, sharing, creating, showing up and being present. The important thing is recognising which one you need right now. It is about identifying the phase of life you are in and asking yourself what locking in should look like for you today.

We often put pressure on ourselves to follow someone else's version of productivity or success. But someone else's framework will never quite fit. That is why it is important to take a step back and reflect on your own version of commitment. What routines support your growth? What boundaries help you stay grounded? What habits help you feel your best?

We all know what we need to do, deep down. We might ignore it sometimes or overcomplicate it, but it is there. Whether it is sleep, movement, breath, stillness, or boundaries around your time or your energy, most of us are aware of the steps we need to take. The question is, are we giving ourselves permission to honour them?

When we do start to listen, something interesting happens. We begin to thrive. We build momentum. And over time, the small lessons and choices start to create a solid foundation, a framework for our life. This is when the benefits of discipline begin to show. It is when being locked in feels energising rather than draining. It is not about being perfect. It is about being aligned.

This is especially relevant for us as Pilates teachers. Whether we are supporting clients or reflecting on our own journey, we must remember that structure and discipline are not meant to trap us. They are meant to support us. Locking in is not about rigidity, it is about clarity.

So take a moment today to check in with yourself. What does locking in mean for you right now? And what small changes could help you feel more dialled in to what matters?

When you find that balance, when your routine fuels you rather than exhausts you, that is the energy worth protecting.
