Pilates Soulful Sunday: What Defines You

Hands cradle stones marked “listener, creative, positive,” symbolising self-definition through values, not status.
Three stones engraved with words reflect the essence of identity beyond material possessions.

We often hear that what we wear, what we drive, where we live, or how fit we are somehow defines us. These markers of status and ability give us something to reach for, and reaching is not wrong. Striving can motivate us to work harder, move better, or think deeper.

But pause for a moment. Who are you without the labels, the measurements, the comparisons?

You are more than the clothes in your wardrobe or the car in your driveway. You are not a sum of your flexibility scores or your ability to keep up in class. What makes you who you are sits in quieter places. In your talents. In your empathy. In your friendships. In the love you give and the way you affect those around you.

Ask yourself this: if you had to write three words to describe yourself, what would they be?

Not your job title. Not your level of fitness. Words that capture the core of you.

Our identities shift with the seasons. Priorities that mattered in one decade lose their grip in the next. Who you are now is not the same person you were before, and that is healthy growth.

So let this be a reminder: yes you are a Pilates teacher but you are unique, and in that uniqueness you are special. Not because of your possessions or how you measure up against anyone else, but because of how you show up in the world.

That is what defines you.
