Pilates Thoughtful Tuesday: How Eye Contact Transforms Your Teaching

Eye contact is one of the most effective tools a Pilates teacher has, yet it is rarely taught, practised, or even acknowledged. You can say ten cues in a row and still lose half the room, but one look at the right moment pulls a client back into their alignment, their breath, and their focus. It works because eye contact communicates presence. It tells the client that you see them, you are with them, and you are guiding them in real time.

When I was in China recently, the teachers there gave me a Chinese name that made me smile. They called me Dragon Eye because I never missed a bad alignment. It reminded me of what I have been told for years, that good Pilates teachers must have eyes in the back of their head. You learn to scan the room in a way that feels natural, and you notice everything from a dropped rib to a drifting knee without breaking the flow of the class.

Eye contact becomes part of that awareness. You do not need to stare at clients or make them uncomfortable. You simply build the habit of looking at the person you are speaking to and giving them enough time to adjust before you move on. When you teach this way, clients pick up corrections faster and they stay more engaged because they know you are paying attention to them.

  • Use eye contact to anchor your teaching.Look at the client before you cue.

  • Check alignment with your eyes first.

  • Pause for a moment and let that look do the work.

  • Then add the words that support the movement.

When you teach with this level of presence, the room feels calmer and more focused. Clients feel supported and they trust your guidance because they know you are watching with intention. It is a small shift that changes the entire tone of a session and strengthens the relationship between you and the people you teach.
