Pilates Wellness Wednesday: Embracing the October Rain – Should You Walk, Run, or Just Stay Dry?

When outdoor exercise meets torrential rain—proof that sometimes staying dry is the better option!
Braving the relentless British rain: walking outside in October's downpour, drenched but determined.

October is here, and with it comes the inevitable deluge of rain. It’s the kind of rain that the British Isles are so famous for—persistent, drizzly, and relentless. The kind that makes you question why you even bother going outside at all! But today, let’s dive into a fun debate: Is exercising outside in the rain, whether walking or running, beneficial for your health, or are you better off staying warm and dry indoors?

I’ll confess upfront—I’m not the biggest fan of getting soaked. I don’t even like walking outside in the rain, let alone running. Soggy shoes, damp clothes, and the general discomfort of being drenched… It’s just not for me. But let’s put my personal preferences aside for a moment and explore whether there’s any merit in embracing the rain for your outdoor fitness routine.

The Positives: Why Exercising in the Rain Might Be a Good Idea

  1. Cooler Temperatures = More Endurance

Rainy weather often brings cooler temperatures, which can be ideal for outdoor exercise. Whether you’re walking or running, the cooler air means your body doesn’t have to work as hard to regulate its temperature. This allows you to keep going for longer without overheating—great news for anyone looking to extend their usual routine. And hey, you can tell yourself that each raindrop is just nature’s way of keeping you cool!

  2. Engages More Muscles for Stability

Wet pavements and muddy paths present an extra challenge to your stability, forcing you to engage those often-neglected muscles to maintain your balance. Your core, which we all know is key in Pilates, plays a crucial role here. Whether you’re power-walking or picking up the pace for a run, the uneven, slippery surface can give your stabilisers an extra workout. Who needs a wobble board when you’ve got British weather?

  3. Mental Resilience and Mindfulness

Exercising in the rain can actually be a mood booster! There’s something quite invigorating about braving the elements, and the rhythmic sound of the rain hitting the pavement can be surprisingly calming. It’s almost like taking a moving mindfulness class. Focus on your breath (we are Pilates teachers, after all), tune into the sounds around you, and enjoy the fact that the rain is washing away your worries – if not your desire to stay dry!

  4. Boosts Your Immune System

Exposure to the elements—within reason—can toughen you up! Exercising outside in the rain might help to boost your immune system, as your body adapts to the changing conditions. Fresh air, even the rainy variety, can be great for clearing the lungs, and the brisk walk or run can stimulate circulation. Just remember to change out of your wet clothes when you get home to avoid that dreaded cold!

  5. Extra Calorie Burn

Believe it or not, walking or running in the rain can actually help you burn more calories. The extra effort required to move through puddles, battle the wind, and keep yourself upright on those slippery surfaces means your body is working harder. So, if you’re looking to up your fitness game, this might just be the way to do it. Rain: nature’s resistance training!

The Negatives: Why Staying Dry Might Be Better

Now, for those of you who, like me, prefer to stay warm and dry, there are some good reasons to keep your outdoor workouts under shelter:

  1. Risk of Injury

Wet pavements, slippery leaves, and hidden puddles can be hazardous. Whether you’re walking or running, the risk of injury increases when the ground is slick. No one wants a sprained ankle or a tumble just because they were determined to brave the rain. Pilates might help us with balance and coordination, but even the best of us can lose our footing when the weather takes a turn for the worse.

  2. That Cold, Damp Feeling

We’ve all been there – you head out feeling optimistic, only to return cold, wet, and shivering. While a brisk walk or run might boost your immune system, getting too cold and wet for too long can have the opposite effect, especially if you’re already feeling a bit run down. And let's be honest, there’s nothing fun about being soaked to the bone. You’ll likely spend more time drying off than you did on the walk!

  3. Personal Comfort

Let’s face it, sometimes comfort trumps all. If you’re anything like me, the thought of getting wet is enough to put you off your exercise plans altogether. There’s no shame in admitting that you prefer to stay dry. On days like this, why not switch up your routine? A Pilates mat session at home can be just as effective (and far less soggy). Who says you can’t stay in and get a great workout?

So, Is It Worth Exercising in the Rain?

At the end of the day, the choice to exercise in the rain depends on your personal preference, comfort level, and the conditions outside. There are certainly benefits—extra calorie burn, mental resilience, and a good immune boost—but there’s also the risk of injury and discomfort to consider.

For those who don’t mind a bit of drizzle, getting outside can be a great way to mix up your routine. You’ll challenge your balance, engage your Pilates core in new ways, and come back feeling invigorated. But for the rest of us (yes, I’ll admit it again), there’s nothing wrong with staying dry and focusing on some indoor Pilates work. After all, keeping fit is about consistency, not suffering through a downpour!

So, what will it be for you? A rain-soaked run or a dry Pilates session? Either way, keep moving—and keep an eye on the weather forecast!
